Psychology of belief

How threat and negative emotion are related to group belief.

Within this reality, phenomenological experiences of emotion have a purpose that is tied into vestiges of evolution. Humans efforts to move beyond animal instincts are often thwarted by not recognizing that some emotional responses are not serving the purpose we assume them to be. Generally speaking, negative emotions associated with fear and anxiety is tied into systems that originally evolved to alert to physical threat. This causes issues when we treat occurrences that are learned and irrational as if they we were in physical danger. In a broad sense, the experience of negative emotions guide you to become conservative and not take risks regardless of what is actually occurring. Positive emotions are meant to open you up to expression, explore in the absence of threat, and expand your mind to include new information. It signals that whatever is happening or could happen is potentially beneficial to the broadening of you. From a spiritual perspective, this is synonymous with love or God. Together these two systems of avoidance/fear and approach/love guide you through life. While we all want more positive emotions, we live in an environment where we must persevere despite fears if want to experience the love that we desire. But what are we actually afraid of? What even is the fear? In our world, it is threats to belief systems that have become an often irrational source of negative emotion. Overcoming this is challenging because the culture, environment. and genetics we come from has within in a vast network of inherited and implicit beliefs that we are not even aware.

A characteristic of humanity is that it treats threats to belief systems as animals would treat threats to physical well-being. This idea forms the basis of why different cultures, nationalities, and political groups are often treated so negatively.  They act so irrationally towards each other because they are responding as if a threat to beliefs are a threat to their life. Neurologically, psychological pain and physical pain evoke have overlapping areas of brain activation. Understanding that this is the case can help with removing your emotional responses to peoples thoughts and ideas. Recognizing that many emotional responses are effectively turning off areas of the brain needed for logic and reason in favor of rash emotional responses is helpful. You can recognize that that is what occurring when you see people arguing on the news or in life and in yourself. This is what the Christ would describe as "they know not what they do." It is a physical truth within the brain that nearly all negative emotions are being treated as threats to safety and turning off logical thinking in favor of fight or flight mechanisms.

You can consider all the violence and contentious issues for humanity as a breakdown in the understanding of ourselves. Know thyself. No where in the public sphere is a accurate understanding of ourselves acknowledge and this leads to insanity and chaos. However, this is something we can overcome because the knowledge is no allowing for it. In this insanity, group identification source of safety because groups in general are used as a surface for projection. Specifically, ones own group is used to project that which is good and other groups are used to project the shadow. Shadow projection is how normal citizens can think genocide of Jews along with the many other atrocities of the World Wars is okay and not recognize the same trends of degrading reason are occurring today. Shadow projection describes the psychological phenomena of how unconsciously suppressed negative aspects of one's self become projected onto others. When not consciously dealt with, they do not go away. They simply control you by being seen in other people. The cultures of the world have a very dangerous herd mentality of having mutually agreed upon opposing groups that act as physical substrates for shadow projection. As such, interactions between groups projecting onto each other become void of reason due to the shutting off of such brain reason by negative emotions that occurs when seeing ones shadow. It is collective purging out of all that one fears about their own unconscious onto others. Obviously, this socially accepted way to delude oneself and hide fears is dangerous. In an "everyone else is doing it" kind of way, directing fears towards people of different beliefs has become the acceptable way of avoiding the sometimes difficult process of overcoming the ego and associated fears.

One of the neglected functions of culture is that it maintains the ego and its associated negative tendencies to protect itself at the expense of the enormous problems that result from ideological strife. We must be able to recognize that passivity of going along with cultural norms because "that's how it is" is one of the main issues. Doing something because everyone else is doing it is a powerfully persuasive tool of the ego. This is the primary way in which the ego uses culture to "reason." We must be able to recognize when we are acting and thinking in a certain way simply because everyone else is. That is not a good reason! The way everyone else is causes genocide and lets unqualified people become president of the United States. The ego uses cultural norms, taboo topics, and the like to avoid dealing with issues that threaten its own existence. Consciously dealing with the root cause of negative emotions break down the ego. Avoiding them through projection and "group think" are to things that being aware of can help you overcome your ego in efforts to develop spiritually and psychologically.

From an abstract level of analysis, cultural beliefs are like an energy based metaphysical prison. There is lot of nice things in the prison, but it does serve a containing function. This is why many historical figures (myself included) were actually treated like criminals for telling the truth. The ego creates a prison while trying to make it seem like it is creating freedom. Anyone point that out by telling the truth is thus like a criminal in this backwards insanity because that is how the rules of culture are set up. No one exemplified this more so than Jesus Christ on the cross. The crimes he was charged with that led to his Crucifixion were of shedding light on the absurdity of cultural norms and its associated rules. He was speaking pure love and that equates to death to the ego.

To note, this is not about pushing any religion. Those ego's out there will try to use the fact that someone is talking about Christ to group them into the Christian fundamentalist. That ironically is an example of how the ego's role in culture resists paradigm changing truth. Christ is being used here because his death on the Cross is a good example of the challenges associated with overcoming cultural forces and the ego in spiritual development. The mind and ego exist withing everything about your environment. The physical structure and logic of how everything is set up has within it a vast network of beliefs and implicit assumptions about reality. Your interactions with people, ways of speaking, rules, norms, taboo topics, and everything else is effectively designed by the ego to preserve itself by avoiding threats to its core beliefs. Different cultures protect different core beliefs and this creates conflict. It is hard to grasp, but you are literally inside a mind. Thinking of it as only physical objects you perceive loses sight of how it effects you. It is an arena of minds interacting energetically. Beliefs and ideas are embedded within everything around you. Shared modes of projection that are implicit within culture help maintain it. Someone like Jesus who stands up to norms and refuses to go along with the absurd anti-love shadow projections that confuse rules with spiritual practice can themselves become victimized because they threaten the structures of reality created by culture. Christ defended the Truth by pointing out the absurdities that arise when hiding behind the belief that everyone doing something makes it "logical." Believing the earth was flat was not logical 1000 years ago and it is not now. Not believing in the One mind and collective consciousness ideas is not logical now or in the future. That will become more obvious as we move forward in the 21st century.

Taking back Projections

Opposing cultural groups projecting onto each other while consciously believing that the problems within their own minds are being caused by others naturally leads towards confrontation. Carl Jung stated that taking back shadow projections is biggest issue we face. He is correct. Nothing can truly be solved until that happens. Collectively we must acknowledge the need to understand that our emotional responses to out-groups have origins within our own mind. Ideological strife is only cowardice. Buying into it like everyone else and being passive in not doing anything about it is a lack of courage. We must realize that our beliefs are unconscious and inherited from culture. You do not truly know what they are and can't. If you are passively going along with what everyone believes then you are not living out truth to it's fullest and being constrained. It is important to know that the whole paradigm of the culture will give you resistance as you try to move towards love. A lot of people believing something does not make it true.  While violence is not always an issue, the concept that negative emotion being felt from outside forces is actually bringing up something inside yourself is widely applicable today. Through online interactions, we are constantly being bombarded many cultures that all have their own beliefs systems. The concept of a celestial speed up and faster karmic evolution during this time is related to this idea. By being exposed to many different beliefs and more often we are being provided with more opportunity to learn about our true Self that is projecting itself.  A reality with more contrast in belief is effectively a higher definition view of our souls. Treating it as such can be of great benefit to you. That is precisely how it is suppose to be treated! Beliefs should be challenged and change. That is how you grow.

Attention

What you consciously experience is only a very limited with respect to how much is out there. Your conscious awareness can be conceptualized as existing between two forces that control the point of awareness knows as attention. Attention is a word that describes what you are seeing and thinking right now. It could be thoughts in your head or something out in the world. The two opposing forces model psychology uses to conceptualize the logic behind attention is the bottom-up and top-down attention model. Top-down attention is considered as more voluntary and bottom-up attention as automatic and fast. Beliefs control bottom-up attention. This is what is effecting the contents of your mind and what you notice throughout the day automatically without any effort or choice on your part. The brain is looking for things it thinks are relevant to maintaining your relationship with the world and verifying what you already believe. Of course, this is good or bad depending upon what your beliefs with respect to a certain situation are. This automatic function is also out of necessity. When live in world of vast amounts of information. Among other reasons, we need this automatic processing component of the mind in order to free up brain resources for processing new information. Do not think that you could ever totally control your mind gravitates to when you move through your day. You should know that it is happening on its own and never conflate the identity of your true Self with the these bottom-up automatic processes. The goal is to be the Self that changes the automatic attention and not the content of attention. Jordan Peterson eloquently describes it as identifying the you that changes you. What gets filtered out by bottom-up attention is what the brain and it's associated beliefs deem as irrelevant to desires and goals. This is point that will require much further discussion, but these goals and desires serve maintenance of the ego self when running automatically and that is obviously often not ideal  The irrelevant information, for all intent and purposes, is not perceived. Research also shows that when you are paying attention to something you are mostly blind to all else. It is not as if you have these detailed understanding of things that are around you but outside awareness. While on this topic, it is a myth that your brain uses 10% of its brain power. It uses all of it. We just don't know exactly what for because it is doing. Presumably, it is maintaining a state of readiness to respond and react. Of many other functions, it is likely also receiving psychic information that reflects the non-locality of consciousness and its inherent unity. It is conceivable that a new paradigm in which we collectively acknowledge this would facilitate perceiving this information. This is a enhancing awareness of the signal in the noise and practicing noticing in the same way people are sensitive to certain sounds. The brain has vast untapped potential. Dreams and extra-sensory perception studies make it clear that the brain perceives information in non-linear ways. Because of the fact that bottom-up attention works to maintain the paradigm, not recognizing such information would be enfolded within the logic of how it directs attention. It is not at all unrealistic to think that a paradigm shift towards love and unity consciousness beliefs would result in more widespread experiences of ESP. Perhaps even a primitive form of telepathy. In addition to countless examples from people today and throughout time, I myself experienced it very overtly during my spiritual experience. This will be topic to discuss more in the future.

Hunger and thirst are basic needs controlling attention in a bottom-up fashion. When you are "hangry" and can think of nothing but food you have experienced how powerful this force is. Outside of these basic needs, humans have the special ability to redefine what is relevant. This is described changing bottom-up attention with top-down attention forcing it to do so. Changing beliefs is our great power! To do this effectively you must know that surface level thoughts are not an avenue towards changing the beliefs that the change your world through impacting bottom-up attention. In depression this is called rumination. In the everyday world this is called cultural norms. Cultural norms are fine except for the fact that what they so is not consciously acknowledge. This gives everyone the illusion that fears ans suffering in society can be dealt with by working at the surface level of automatic attention. Just because it takes intellectual though does not mean it is addressing it at a core level that will impact it. You only get the illusion and hope that it could. That is what the ego does. It tells you "hope is around the corner" and it never comes. It creates new forms and makes you think you solved them when you only displaced. This how our paradigm works. It is only through understanding how negative emotions are related to your own beliefs in the deeper levels of the mind that true change can happen. Culture, as discussed earlier, protects against this process.

To conceptualize this negative function of culture you can think of it as a mind prison. Culture has the effect of keeping your attention upon that which will have no real effect on the beliefs that underlie yourself and the world more generally. It does this with shared views, interests, and taboo topics. The keys out of the prison are right in front of us, but they are guarded by fears and beliefs that intentionally exclude spirituality and God. For example, the mainstream views on politics, excessive social media use, mainstream views in the news, violence, partisan issues, entertainment, science, economics, sports and much else are all serving the ego's function of maintaining the paradigm.  There is little to no content anywhere on TV or even the internet that addresses anything at the core because it all came from an insane and backwards paradigm. At the most core level, this paradigm assumes that consciousness arises from brain matter and that the reality works on us in an outside-in manner. This is backwards and that has resulted in everything being fairly backwards. It is more accurate to think that we project out a reality from our brains. Not that the reality projects into our brains from the world.

Changing your level of analysis to effect core beliefs

The culturally ingrained bottom-up attention programming picks out specific aspects and ignores the big picture. It loses sight of the forest by singling out trees. The One mind of God is inherently very abstract. Abstract means it sees unity through percieving the essence of that what is and not focusing on the details that create contrast and separateness. In trying to change core beliefs, it is good to keep in mind the difference in level of analysis. By understanding that unity consciousness and love is inherently more abstract helps tune you in to what this level is like. God is very abstract and our culture is very concrete. They both lead to different beliefs about the world. Abstract towards love and concrete towards fear. However, it does not have to be that way. The goal for us would be to know when each our appropriate. Mainstream culture is very non-abstract in its conceptualizes. It confuses surface level facts as reason. This kind of thinking leads to bizarre irrationality that makes people blind to the deeper complexity of the issues. Our true Self is naturally more abstract. Love is a very abstract concept. It is timeless and eternal. That is very unlike how our ego and the culture it maintains operates. Love is not just an idea we create with thinking about. It is an entire way of being. The paradigm of our culture has a certain level of peace and harmony it can allow for. We will not create it by tinkering at the surface level as we do with normal discussions of politics and economics. It does not work like that. You must get at the core beliefs and everything about culture works to prevent doing so. Thinking in an abstract way that extracts out the essence of the subject at hand is a way. That is in fact how the One mind operates and doing naturally leads ideas that facilitate true unity. That forms the basis of the train of thought that led to the metaphysical revelations. It allows for the big perspective that recognizes the cycles of humanity and factors in archetypes possible.

Abstraction in Perception

To get a grasp of the kind of abstraction that we need, consider that normal perception is already very abstract. When we percieve, only the relevant features of object that are needed to reconstruct a particular mental representation are picked out. As how eye tracking demonstrates with face perception, it is relevant features of the eyes, noses, and mouth that are used to identify a person. The relevant features are those that create a certain understanding of the believed relationship between the thing and a goal. Goal in the sense of how your unconscious believes you should respond in that particular situation. This is far from a 1 to 1 correlation between the actual thing and your perception. You only have abstract representations of the environment. The unity of features is the magic that consciousness creates.  As individuals, extracting out the the core essence of that which makes people the same despite appearing different physically is love. That which makes us share in the human experience at an abstract level being extracted out as relevant features is experienced as loving unity. At the core, that were are equals from the perspective of God and come from the same source are features that perceptually abstracting out from people results in a feeling of love. Fear naturally goes away when you realize other people are same and only going through their own experiences that make them seem different when picking out different features. Truly, as evidenced by vast evidence of ESP and quantum entanglement demonstrate that we are connected through consciousness. Thinking about that evidence can make one feel love because the intimate features that our consciousness can bind together.  However, they are ironically taboo topics in psychology.  Psychology is the field we look towards for understanding our selves and studying those ideas would naturally lead to God, unity consciousness and projection. Those ideas are kept out of culture in an metaphysical and energetic way. People in the filed of psychology fell fear and pressure from the paradigm to not reaserach such ideas. Doing so would take standing up against the zeitgeist and ask Jesus, Martin Luther King, and Ghandi how easy that is. Effectively, it takes people believing in how important it is is and caring more about society than there own careers. Hopefully this can begin to help wake people up to what is at stack with these ideas. They poke holes in the insane paradigm and provide avendues towards changing the world. ESP are ET's are fact! Deal with it ego's! Spirituality is real thing. As such, ignoring it can only be insane. That means we are ignoring the eternal truth's, our ycles of karmic evolution, and resisting something that is inevitable in favor fear and human suffering. Which is insane. Obviously.

The features in the environment used in abstraction are based on your beliefs and desires. Fundamentally, a few features are observed and then the details are filled in from memory and past experiences. This concept is fairly well understood at the psychological and neurological level. What is not as clear, is what relevant features are needed to create the experience of the perception? What is the resolution needed? That is, how fine of details are needed to create the experience? That depends upon the contextual goals and desires.

Let’s consider the experience of perceiving a tree in two different situations. Hypothetically, the brain picks out part of the outline of the trunk, sees some features of the leaves and branches, and fills in the details through a reconstruction from stored information on trees. That is the image in the minds eye for a typical everyday occurrence of seeing a tree. This tree perceiving experience is exceptionally uneventful and the same as thousands before. Now, imagine the same scenario but with a fluffy dog is wagging its big fluffy tails. It is galloping towards you.  As always in such situations, you start freaking out and frantically seek a way to get out due to your bad case of doraphobia (doraphobia: fear of fur bearing animals). This time when you look at the tree you notice there is low branch. You run to the tree, grab the branch, and pull yourself up. The potentially horrific encounter is safely avoided. That experience of perceiving the tree was very different because the goals of the moment. Before, you were just looking around and noticed it. This time you were in danger and trying to escape. This difference exemplifies how goals are used to categorize the environment into tools to use and obstacles to avoid. Thus perception becomes dependent upon beliefs in a way that is primary to the actual perception. The beliefs about something dictates its use in relationship to goals In that moment. The goals of which are themselves mutable and dependent upon culture, genetics, and experiences. This is empirically. As you can see, direct perception is not taking place This is the concept of naive realism. Naive realism describes that we falsely presume we see the environment as it exists.  In the example, the same person experienced the same thing differently because a weird belief about fluff that came from a childhood experience he doesn't even remember. That is a very simple explain. Imagine how complicated and hopelessly lost our cultures is when trying to create a peaceful global society. The multitude of implicit assumptions embedded within culture that we do not even know exists and vary between groups of people makes it so that we are in fact doomed. The amount of variable factors to take into account when trying to understand dynamic interactions between multiple cultural belief systems is beyond comprehension. This situation is insolvable when considerning that the beliefs systems themselves are dictated by the ego trying to avoid  with fears and emotional issues that would have to be overcome when coming to agreement. The lesson from our Divine Self wants us to get is that it is all crazy! We can transcend it and get a clear view by simply accepting and letting go of the paradigm that excludes One mind concepts. It is clear only the "elite" and people at the very top benefit. There is nothing God that comes from ignoring the truth. It is all an illusion. Initially, you are just afraid of sticking your head out from the crowd. Even the elite do not benefit from the eternal and spiritual perspective that is way more important.

We do not to deal with all the complexities and non-sense. Some of it, but much of it ceases to be an issue when you get with the program the Divine Self is pushing. It wants us to neutralize the projections by taking on a dual view the abstract level of God's love. Seeing them as they threatens the ego. Not you. What level of analyis are you looking at when understanding global and politica issues? Think about your God self and you will begin to pick out the relevant features for abstracting unity. Trump isn't relevant feature to unity. If he is, it only to recognize that politicians are a surface level symptom of paradigm that picks out wrong relevant features. If you you want to see love you got to look at the big picture. You don't see love in humanity by seeing how society repeats cycles across time that appear to be spiraling upwards towards greater unity consciousness (see this post). The more abstract and eternal view gives a sense of unity and God's love. Fear is uncertainty about what will happen next week and next year. Love sees that are progession is positive and love is waiting for us when we decide to wake up to what it is doing. It takes into account the reality of ESP despite the fact that it is an abstract idea with unclear results we do not fully understand. That is the ego which can ignore enourmous amounts of positive findings of precognition, telepathy, and synchrnocity. Doing so is completely rediculous to the very logic it claims to use in science. The fear of studying and taking serious such ideas is not their validity. It is the far reaching implications. Taking them serious leads to a total paradigm shift. You cannot not claim to understand them without concluding a paradigm shift necessary. Because then spirituality and unity consciousness take on a central role because it means we are having affects on ourselfs that extend for beyond this life. It changes everything, but that is exactly what is needed. We are forcing ourselves to have crazy dynamics in the mainstream with vast reams of knowledge that have to be avoided to maintain the incorrect paradigm.

In the dog and tree example, the low branch of the tree became relevant when the person was in fear of the dog. This is true of all things seen or heard. When you experience fear things related to escaping the fear become relevant. This creates a continuous experience of seeing and escaping fears that are based on false assumptions. That summarizes what culture is for us today. We have bottom-up attention directing us to learned fears and then the response to this creates an experience related to that fear. It is all abstracting out features relevant to insane fear. Then consciousness fills in the details after picking out a few features that it learned from a culture that is insane. The features only have to fit a certain pattern to then recreate the same category of experiences from information that can take many forms. It creates the same things over and over in different guises. There are only different in details filled in. That is also the cocnept of archetypes. Archetypes, which are primary to the human brain (Guiding consciousness but not being caused by the brain), as evidence by being consistent across history and culture, describe a pattern of behavior to a similar effect that takes on different forms. This characteristic of life is why we repeat the same problems while not notice them to be the same until it is too late. Our ego is running an automatic program that we identify with as being a concsious chocie. It's not. To transcend ego, you must learn to notice these automatic processes for what they are. They are maintaining homeostasis. That's fine if you want to stay the same and have same fears forever. If you want to improve consciousnesses you must identify with that which improves consciousness. That is you God self. Over time you can get  better at recognizing that motives of your God Self and choosing those over ego. That comes from top-down attention. But, it is important to remember that the ego also uses top-down attention for its pruposes. The true Self is using top-down attention to intentionally identify with infinite eternal God self that is pure love.

Psychology of aligning with God's will

Goals and desires dictate what your attention picks out of the environment. This is true of both bottom-up and top-down attention. From a western perspective of psychology, the science of goal directed behavior provides a lot of useful support for spirituality. At a core abstract level, the goal of spirituality and be conceptualized as aligning with God's will. The same brain mechanisms described in the literature on top-down attention, learning, positive reinforcement, and other topics related to goal setting are relevant. A well function brain, according to the science is one that sets goals that support long-term life satisfaction and is then able to plan and carry out a set of cognitive process and behaviors that move one towards those goals. For example, graduating from college so that one can get a specific job and then have a family is a complex amalgamation sub-goals within umbrella goals that bring desired occurrences about over the course of many years. When understanding the science of spirituality, it is helpful to look towards the science of goal directed behavior perception. It is basically long-term goals. So long that it is eternal! Science already knows being able to set long-term goals and devalue short-term impulsive rewards is a hallmark of a well function brain. This is talking that and extending to future lives. The goal is simply becomes aligning with God's will and/or higher-self. While not researched explicitly, it takes many of the same skills. Including effectively overcoming automatic bottom-up process with top-down attention. It this perspective which forms the basis of the logic behind Awakening U. Established psychology can be used to support spiritual development and understand the challenges associate with changing your own beliefs and those of our culture.

It is through recognizing the value in Christ consciousness, another way to describe aligning with God's will, that setting such a goal with an eternal perspective can become possible. This is what changes the environment entirely. This is rare currently. Religions do not do this because they fit within the paradigm that does not recognize consciousness and change as being an inside-out process.  What we are going for is actively resisted by others and your own ego. It turns the tables on reality and uncovers all the stones where fears hide. Jesus himself can vouch for the fact that this is so despite being more true, coherent, and loving.  It is something that never has been successfully done since Jesus because it is tricky business and all around bizarre. How are you suppose to convey to people that it all backwards? Jesus use metaphors or parables. That seems like a good route.

Imagine you are living in a place that is always covered in snow. With snow effecting daily life, you have a bunch of different world describing the different types of snow. The different kinds effect you differently. Deep fluffy snow is going to be harder to walk in than crunchy snow. If it moist snow, you can use it to make snowballs. Slushy snow could make you wet. On the other-hand, a person who does not live n snow would only have one word to classify all types of snow and would not really understand what the snow person is talking about. For them, the snow type impacts how they move through the environment and all else they do outside. For the other person it is meaningless. You brain notices that which effects your goals. Easy enough concept. Now imagine you lived in snow and then it all melted for you. Also, everyone else still thinks there is still snow. This is a metaphor for a spiritual awakening and the challenges of aligning with God's will. First of all, you see an entirely different reality that includes grass, flowers, and snow-less paths to move freely. Everyone wants to move about freely, but they are worried about plowing snow that isn't there and will never go away. It is a bizarre situation. Love and selflessness melts the snow. Besides claiming to want that which is good, the culture is afraid to change beliefs that are not even real and preventing good snow melting warmth of love.

The difference between snow and no snow is enormous. These different paradigm coexist. The mind can see whatever it wants. Although, that does not mean the are both unreal and everything is relative. Better beliefs about reality are measured by how effective goals based on those beliefs are achieved. The illusionary paradigm is invalid because attempts to solve societal issues have never worked. We still have the same ideological strife. This is addition to the fact that it does not hold up against evidence of ESP and supernatural spiritual experiences that suggest One mind concepts.

Trying to communicate that something people worry as problems are not actually the problems in the way they think they are is a challenge because the paradigm is wrong is a challenge. What do you do? You are forced to implicitly acknowledge a reality you know is not there because you live in the culture and try to help others see what you see. There is a lot of resistance within this daily effort. The goal is organize your life around a higher goal that ties into the eternal. It with understanding that you overcoming this resistance is having healing effects on your soul that you can experience peace in the face of this apparent conflict.

Interacting belief systems

Let’s now look at what is happening when people with different beliefs systems are interacting in the same environment. The brain is evaluating the environment and selecting features that have been learned to be aspects of something that is relevant to certain goals. All of this is learned. What you believe the things in the environment are for is what you use to determine their relationship to your goals and classify them as tools, obstacles, or irrelevant. All of your goal that seem achievable rest upon the assumption that beliefs are true. It needs those to know how to guide perception and behavior in goal pursuit. Thus, your brain takes its beliefs very seriously. Opposing beliefs are a threat to the world as you know it and puts you in a state of anxious uncertainty. In this state you are confused about what are tools, what are obstacles, and previously irrelevant things become relevant as the selection of features in the environment and details filled in from the abstraction is altered. In the extreme form, this state activates the survival mechanism of freezing because there is no clear course of action when the classification system is not able to do its job. Not being able to predict what things are is the worse nightmare for bottom-up attention. Bottom-up attention needs to able to do that in order to create those fast automatic responses that have been important for survival throughout evolution. Therefore, it the ego resists information that impacts learned responses. This is major problem when cultures have different belief systems. It is not realized that the perceptions and only maintain paradigm that is itself not based in anything objectively real.

Throughout history this has issue gas devastated societies and caused terrible wars  Different beliefs systems lead to different conclusions on how to function as a society. That which is relevant and how things function are incompatible. People with different systems are quite literally living in their own worlds in the sense that what they perceive in the environment is different in function and structure. The information taken from the same exact same place in time and space can be completely different. This is the situation in politics. This is currently occurring in many developed nations between leftist and rightist groups. It is a toxic situation. However, there is hope. A understanding of the psychological and biological basis offers a way out that does not require the great destruction that has been typical in such situations in past. An issue to overcome is that these insights simultaneously prove God, prove spritual nature of this projected dream reality, and change the entire paradigm. That or we are in a computre simulation. Whateever reality is, it is definitly not outside-in view we take for granted.

In situation where there is a single a person you don't like, bottom-up attention will always focus on and show you when they do something bad and ignore the good. Someone you don’t like may be an obstacle to a goal or be someone who represents a threat to the belief system within which you operate. In any argument, someone has a belief, the other person is trying to give reasons for it not being true, and then this goes back and forth. It doesn't matter who is right and most often both are wrong.  When they threaten you beliefs, the natural response is to rationalize to yourself why what they are wrong or lower their perceived credibility for more personal reason that are not necessarily related to their actual reasoning. In politics, this can take the form of saying “conservatives are anti-science so I don’t need to listen to their argument. Thus, the need to consider what they are saying is avoided all together. “Name calling” is another tactic in the same spirit that used by many groups. When rationalizing to oneself is defense mechanisms, only specific features about what the other group is saying are picked out as tools to your argument. These can be used to support a belief and argue against obstacles presented by the other viewpoint. Often, most of the opposing argument is outside of the perceptions created by the interaction between beliefs and goals and therefore irrelevant. It is not even perceived. Stability of a belief system is done by picking out reasons that are relevant to supporting it.  This occurs to maintain a worldview that is based consistent classification and interpretation of things as tools, obstacles, and irrelevant.

You need to be smarter than that in order to more effectively control your life and avoid overly escalated arguments by realizing what is actually affect the experience of you and others. When your classification of tools and obstacles more accurately reflects their true nature it enhances the effectiveness of goal pursuit. This also makes you more resistant to potential negative impacts of outside forces interfering with beliefs. Additionally, the process is important to creativity and innovation. As opposed to being confronted by opposing beliefs, the idea is to get in the habit of voluntarily confronting them. When you seek them out or accept the truth that beliefs are only beliefs, it is a very different experience than when they are forced upon you. This is also the essence of what is meant by facing your fears, psychological therapy, and the benefits that result.

The type of thinking that tries to confirm beliefs and prevents learning information that contradicts it is referred to as confirmation bias. This is defined as seeking or interpreting of evidence in ways that are partial to existing beliefs or expectations. It does not matter if the overall evidence is in support of or against the belief. The evidence as you come to understand it will support what you believe no matter what the reality. However, the knowledge that can really help with breakthroughs is often incorporating things outside your beliefs. It is also critical to disagreements that result when belief systems come in contact. When both sides approach each other with the mindset that they do not completely understand everything and there are things they can still learn, the situation is much better. Common ground can be found and new belief system that combines information from each can allow for something better. This has the potential to create something in which both sides can work together and pursue their goals. When the two sides are radically different that does not seem possible like it does when the difference that become exaggerated due involuntary belief encounters. When not voluntary, the two sides use defense mechanisms make the differences more extreme. This is what results personal attacks to discredit everything they are saying and more extreme perceived differences due to more biased understanding of what the other side is saying.

When you look into that vast amount information that is normally irrelevant great things can happen. When perceptions are strictly bounded by belief things like learning information through curiosity and innovative breakthroughs during the pursuit of goals are less likely. When you can voluntarily find information by things and ideas from belief systems your normally do not your potential is greater. It allows for see opportunities and knowledge that people often do not..  With practice you will not get tricked by the brain making you think only certain things are out there. Combined with proper goal setting, the awareness of the fact there is valuable information to be found in considering other belief systems and that yours should sometimes be changed or adjusted can is the best way to create your highest potential.
